Bethany Spacey, Zurich Insurance

Bethany Spacey, Zurich Insurance

A levels I Assistant Underwriting Service Specialist

What were you doing before this role?

Before my role in underwriting I studied Photography, English Language and Media at Peter Symonds College in Winchester. I also worked part time at the Solent hotel in Whiteley.

Why did you decide not to go to university?

I decided university was not the path for me after having attended various open days.

What do you do in a typical working day?

My typical working day will include a communication cell in the morning (here we discuss our successes and individual goals for the day). I work on a rota basis, therefore, Monday, Wednesday and Friday will be spent completing metrics work and processing policies into the systems. Tuesdays and Thursdays are spent completing finance work and handling external queries.

How does your role fit into the wider insurance picture?

My team and I input the insurance policies/policy conditions into our systems. From this, claims can be added for policies such as motor, casualty and financial lines.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy working alongside diverse individuals. As Zurich is a global corporation there are so many diverse individuals with different mindsets and opinions on situations and problem-solving. In addition to this, I also love the career opportunities.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

The most challenging part of my role is working in a split team. 50% of the underwriting services (UWS) team is located in London which can make communication tricky at times.

Have you taken any professional qualifications?

Yes, I am currently studying CII exams to gain a qualification in insurance.

What have been your career highlights so far?

My career highlights so far have been participating in the Zurich hamper challenge and learning a completely new role. The Zurich hamper challenge entailed raising money to create hampers for CLIC Sargent.

What are the main benefits of working in the profession?

The main benefit is being able to understand insurance for different situations.

Why did you choose a career in insurance?

I chose a career in insurance because it manages risks that we all face. Insurance is a global occupation with more and more opportunities every day.  « Back to case studies
